The House of SAKAE ART

A Legacy in Gold

SAKAE ART is one of very few houses in Japan devoted to authentic, traditional gold-thread obi art. We lift these woven masterpieces from the loom and frame them as enduring works of art — so a near-lost craft may grace the wall, and live on, across generations.

Our Story

Born in Kyoto, rooted in 1,500 years

Born in the ancient capital of Kyoto, the art of gold-thread weaving carries a history spanning some 1,500 years. It reached its zenith in the 1930s, only to fade over time into a near-forgotten technology as Japan turned toward the West and the kimono left everyday life.

Today, newly woven gold obi are rarely found, and the artisans who command this exacting craft have grown few. SAKAE ART exists to honour what remains — selecting one-of-a-kind pieces, framing them by hand to museum standard, and presenting an extraordinary union of history, craftsmanship, and timeless beauty.
